Master Programmes in Computer Science
See also information for prospective students.
The Department of Computer Science at JKU offers the following four master studies
which have the same modular structure and differ in their specialisation on a major and a minor subject (see master curriculum). In addition to that there is an interdisciplinary master study
which is offered together with the departments of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Bioinformatics and Pervasive Computing can also be studied in English, whereas the other master studies are basically in German, although there is a growing number of courses that are offered in English.
General structure
The master studies Informatik, Netzwerke und Sicherheit, Pervasive Computing, and Software Engineering have the same regular structure and consist of the following parts:
- The major subject (25 hours/week) is the core of each master study and consists of those courses that are characteristic for this study.
- The minor subject (12 hours/week) gives students a second area of competence. It consists of courses that must be selected from the major subject of a particular other master study of this curriculum.
- The electives (12 hours/week) consist of a computer science elective and a free elective. The courses of the computer science elective must be selected from a catalogue that is common to all master studies of this curriculum. They give students a chance to extend their computer science knowledge beyond the major and minor subjects. The free elective courses can be chosen from all studies at any university. They give students the opportunity to educate their personality and to acquire skills beyond computer science.
- The master thesis seminars (6 hours/week) serve to prepare and guide the composition of the master thesis. These seminars are compulsory courses.
- The master thesis is the final project in every master study. It is a scientific work, in which the knowledge and skills obtained during the study should be applied.
Duration and degree
All master studies take 4 semesters (120 ECTS) and finish with the academic degree Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) which is equivalent to the international degree Master of Science (MSc).
Pre-registration
Since winter semester 2011/12 all students who enrol into a study at JKU for the first time have to pre-register until August 31 (for a start in the winter semester) or until January 31 (for a start in the summer semester) under https://voranmeldung.jku.at. The pre-registration is already possible even if the preceding bachelor study will be finished after the deadline.
Students who graduated from a bachelor study at JKU do not have to pre-register for a subsequent master study at JKU.
Master study "Pervasive Computing" in English
The master study Pervasive Computing can be studied completely in English. All courses of its major subject are in English. For the minor subject students can select 12 hours (18 ECTS) from a special list of courses (see here). For the electives there is a sufficient number of courses in English.
Recommended course of study
The courses of the major and minor subjects should be taken during the first two semesters. The last two semesters should be used for the electives and for the master thesis.
